STUDY IN INDIA (SELF-FINANCE), INCLUDING SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEMES IN BRIEF

Over the years, India’s contribution to the development of human resources in Nepal has been one of the major aspects of India-Nepal cooperation.

• Around 3000 scholarships/seats are provided every year by Government of India through the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, to Nepali nationals for undergoing various courses at the level of Ph.D/Masters, Bachelors for study in India; and Bachelors and Class-XI for study in Nepal.

• These scholarships/seats are provided for a wide spectrum of studies ranging from engineering, agriculture, pharmacology, computer application, business administration, music and fine arts, etc.

• Bharat-Nepal Maitri Shiksha Karyakaram is a short-term course for undergraduate and post-graduate students of Nepal. The programme was launched in 2014 to provide opportunities to the young minds to better understand different facets of life in India and India-Nepal relations and progress made by the country in various fields. 

[Important: Most of the systems of application and availing of the schemes listed below require filling up of forms online. All applicants are requested to ensure that the data entered by them, in particular, regarding name and identity, marks obtained, etc. are fully accurate and correct and tally with their mark sheets. Failure to do so could result in the summary rejection of the application at any stage. The necessity for ensuring that the data in the applications is fully accurate and tallies with the mark sheet is also applicable to schemes where the applications are submitted in hard copies.]

DESCRIPTIONS OF IMPORTANT SCHOLARSHIP SCHEMES OF EMBASSY OF INDIA, KATHMANDU

1. COMPEX Scholarship Scheme:

            Under COMPEX Scheme, Embassy of India provides admission with scholarships to undergraduate courses in Engineering (BE), Pharmacy (B. Pharmacy), Agriculture (B.Sc-Agri), Dairy Technology (B.Sc. - DT) and B.Sc. (Nursing) in Indian Universities and Institutes.

Due to the requirement of NEET score, MBBS/BDS seats (Self-finance) are no longer included in the COMPEX scheme entrance exam.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is announced tentatively in April/May.  Notice of COMPEX Scholarship Scheme is advertised in local newspapers and uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in).

2. AYUSH Scholarship Scheme:

            Under AYUSH scholarship scheme, Embassy of India provides admission to Undergraduate/Post Graduate/PhD courses in Ayurveda/Unani/Homeopathy system of medicines for study in Indian institutions.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is announced tentatively in May/June every year.  Notice is advertised in local newspapers and is uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in) nearer the time of opening of this scheme.  

3. APS Scholarship Scheme:

Under APS Scholarship Scheme, Embassy  of India provides admission to School level courses starting from Class VI to IX  and XI ( boys and girls) in Army Public Schools (APS) in  APS Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand), Class VI to IX (boys only) for APS Dhaula Kuan (Delhi), and class VI to IX (girls only ) for APS Noida (UP). 

When & How to Apply: Scheme is announced tentatively in January/February every year.  Notification for submission of forms is put up on Indian Embassy notice board. 

4. General Scholarship Scheme  (GSS):

Under GSS, Embassy of India provides admission to under-graduate courses in BBA, BCA, BA, BA (Hons), B.Sc., B.Com, BA (Music/Performing Arts) under General Scholarship Scheme in Indian Universities/Institutes.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is announced tentatively in December/January every year.  In this regard, a Notice is put up on notice board and uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in) nearer the time of opening of this scheme.

5. SAARC Scholarship Scheme:

Under this scheme, admission is provided to B.Sc (Hospitality & Hotel Management) course in Indian institutions.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is announced tentatively in December/January every year.  In this regard, a Notice is put up on notice board and uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in) nearer the time of opening of this scheme.

6. Silver Jubilee Scholarship Scheme (SJSS):

Under SJSS, admission is provided to Nepalese candidates for MBA, MCA, MA, M.Sc & Ph.D in all streams except Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine and Para-medical courses in Indian Universities and Institutions.

7. Dr. Homi J. Bhabha Scholarship Scheme:

Under Dr. Homi J. Bhabha Scholarship Scheme, admission is provided to Nepalese candidates in Master of Engineering (ME) course in Indian Universities and Institutions.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is tentatively announced in December/January every year.  In this regard, a Notice is put up on notice board and uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in) nearer the time of opening of this scheme.  

8. Nepal Aid Fund Scholarship Scheme :

Under Nepal Aid Fund Scholarship Scheme, admission is provided to Nepalese candidates in M.Sc (Agriculture) in Indian Universities and Institutions.

When & How to Apply: Scheme is tentatively announced in December/January every year.  In this regard, a Notice is put up on notice board and uploaded on Embassy of India’s website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in) nearer the time of opening of this scheme.

9. MAHATMA GANDHI SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

Under Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme, Embassy of India provides scholarships to Nepalese students enrolled in Class-XI in recognized colleges/schools in Nepal.

Scholarship Amount Selected students will get a scholarship of NRs. 2,000/- per month in the first year. This will be continued in the second year also, provided the awardee gets 50% or above marks in Class-XI. The scholarship will be discontinued if the percentage of marks obtained by the awardee falls below 50% in class XI or for any other reason that the Embassy may deem necessary.

10. GOLDEN JUBILEE SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME 

Under Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme, Embassy of India provides scholarships to students enrolled in Bachelor 1styear/1st semester of undergraduate courses in recognized educational institutions in Nepal in the fields of medicines, engineering and other disciplines.

Scholarship Amount: Selected students in medical/engineering disciplines will get a scholarship of NRs. 4,000/-per month. The scholarship for students in other disciplines will be NRs. 3,000/- per month. The scholarship will be discontinued if the percentage of marks obtained by the awardees falls below 50% in each subsequent year or for any other reason that the Embassy may deem necessary.

SELF –FINANCING SCHEMES

1. MBBS/BDS & PG Medical (Self-Financing): 

Under self-finance scheme, a limited number of seats for MBBS and PG Medical courses for study in India are offered. The PG Medical course is allotted at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi. NEET-UG/PG score is mandatory for those who seek admission to MBBS/BDS and PG Medical courses in India. Fees for study of the medical courses under self-finance in India are decided by respective institutes/colleges/Universities. Submission of application form for MBBS/BDS is announced on Embassy of India’s website and submission of application form for PG Medical is announced on the Embassy of India’s notice board during February/March. 

2. Bachelor of Engineer (BE) courses (Self-financing): 

Applications are also invited for BE Self-finance during February/March for study in India. Notification for submission of application form is made on the Indian Embassy website. Fees for study of BE courses under self-finance in India are decided by respective institutes/colleges/Universities. BE Self-finance does not come under COMPEX scheme.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Embassy of India notifies eligibility criteria/selection process separately in website (www.indembkathmandu.gov.in)/news paper/notice board at the time of opening of particular schemes as mentioned in calendar. Interested candidates may monitor the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, website regularly for information regarding exact date of opening a scheme. Above information regarding schemes are tentative and are subject to change.

THE ITEC AND THE COLOMBO PLAN SCHOLARSHIPS FOR TRAINING IN INDIA

Under the Indian Technical & Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Programme and under the Colombo Plan, short term trainings are provided in diverse fields to employees of the Government of Nepal, public & private sectors to upgrade their professional skills. Brochure giving details of courses offered under ITEC and Colombo Plan is available at Embassy of India’s website.

Eligibility: 

(i) Candidate should meet the criteria of basic/professional qualification & should have minimum experience as specified in the training brochure.

(ii) Applicants should be between 25 and 45 years of age.

(iii) Candidate should possess working knowledge of English to follow the course.

(iv) Candidate should be medically fit to undertake the course

(v) If a candidate has already attended a Course sponsored by Government of India, he/she is not eligible for ITEC Courses.

(vi) Applicant should have minimum five years’ work experience to apply the course.

Selection Process: Candidates will be interviewed at the time of submitting the applications in the Embassy of India, Kathmandu. Final selection will be made by the authorities concerned in the Government of India, based on applicant’s academic record, experience and relevance of course applied for vis-a-vis applicants’ profile.  

When & How to Apply: Applications are required to be filled in online. Detailed procedure has been outlined at the Embassy of India’s website under the head ‘Education/Scholarship’.
